Full Itinerary
Let your imagination run wild on the legendary Silk Road. The timeless treasures of an ancient civilisation meet captivating landscapes and a mix of Central Asian influences on this adventure that stretches 4,000 km across the breadth of China. Travel from the capital, Beijing, to the mountains of the Tian Shan, culminating in the crossroads town of Kashgar, centre of trade for hundreds of years. Discover the legends of a route that changed the world, and get an insight into the rapidly changing cultures of the people who inhabit these lands that make up the Silk Road.

Days 1-3 Beijing
Discover old-world China on a guided tour of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Take a day trip to a remote section of the Great Wall to walk the ancient pathway and admire the views.
Days 4-6 Xi'an
The launching point for the Silk Road, Xi'an bursts with ancient sights. See the Terracotta Warriors - 6,000 eternally vigilant soldiers that guard the tomb of the First Emperor. Enjoy free time to explore the city, climb the pagodas or discover the enchanting Muslim Quarter.
Days 7-8 Jiayuguan
Travel across the desert fringe to the Ming dynasty fortress of Jiayuguan. Here, the massive Great Wall completes its snaking journey marking China's historic boundary.
Days 9-11 Dunhuang
Marvel at the cultivated fields surrounding the oasis town of Dunhuang. Ride camels through the desert and watch a sunrise from atop massive sand dunes. Visit the 4th century Mogao Caves, adorned with extraordinary Buddhist artwork.
Days 12-13 Turpan
This former Silk Road staging post is now famous for its vineyards and Flaming Mountains - come midday, the red-hot hues of the peaks appear to lick the skyline. Tour the Emin Minaret and the ruins of ancient Jiaohe, and sample local wines in Grape Valley.
Days 14-15 Heavenly Lake
Savour the fresh air and alpine wilderness. As a guest of a local Kazakh family, sleep in a traditional yurt and feast on a hearty home-cooked meal by the lake shore.
Days 16-19 Kashgar
Traverse the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert by train and arrive at the crossroads of Central Asia. Kashgar is still a city of dusty lanes crammed with market stalls. Visit the famous Sunday bazaar and witness the bustle of one of the world's great trading spots.

From Kashgar flights depart to Urumqi from where there are regular departures to other destinations in China such as Beijing and Shanghai as well as a number of international flights. Domestic flights from Kashgar (Kashi) can be booked online using your credit card through elong.net and ctrip.com. Approximate cost of Kashgar - Urumqi is 1200 CNY and Urumqi - Beijing is 2100 CNY. Flights are not included in the cost of your trip and will be unaccompanied by an Intrepid leader.
