DAYS 1 - 7, Cape Town, Orange River, Fish Rver Canyon, Namib Nakluft National Park, Swakopmund
We start our tour with a visit one of Cape Town’s townships on a cultural tour and have a traditional lunch before traveling north to the citrus farming area of the Western Cape and desert lands of Namaqualand en route to the Gariep (Orange) River, which marks the border with Namibia.
The first stop in Namibia is one of the natural wonders of Africa - the Fish River Canyon. At some places 500m deep and 160km long, this is the world’s 2nd largest canyon (after the Grand Canyon). Further north we travel into the desert at the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the world’s oldest desert and location of the world’s highest sand dunes (up to 300m) at Sossusvlei. Climb a dune at dawn for a dramatic view of sunrise across the vast sea of sand. Sandwiched between the desert and the ocean is Swakopmund, a delightful coastal resort and a wonderful place to relax. Various optional activities are available here including quad biking and sand boarding in the surrounding sand dunes, skydiving
DAYS 8 - 11, Cape Cross, Spitzkoppe, Etosha National Park, Windhoek
Further up the eerie Atlantic Coast, is the Cape Cross Seal Colony, home to some 80,000 seals. Continuing inland we pass through the spectacular rock formations of Damaraland at Spitzkoppe. Here we camp among the massive rock outcrops and see ancient bushman paintings. Etosha National Park - a vast reserve of over 20,000 sq. km, surrounds a central salt ‘pan’ and features some 114 mammal and 340 bird species.
We enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and camp for two nights next to fl oodlit waterholes, which adds to game viewing. From Etosha, we travel south to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city, where our safari ends. DAYS 1 - 5, Etosha National Park, Swakopmund
Leaving Windhoek and Etosha National Park. This vast reserve of over 20,000 sq km surrounds a central salt pan. We track game by day and spend two nights camping near floodlit water holes. From Etosha we pass into Damaraland, an area of eerie landscapes and barren rocky outcrops and camp in the tranquil area of Spitskoppe also known as the Matterhorn of Africa and have the opportunity to see ancient bushman paintings.
From Spitzkoppe we head to the Atlantic Coast and visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony, home to 80,000 seals and the site where Portuguese mariner Diego Cão, first set foot on the coast of south-west Africa in 1486. Further south, sandwiched between the ocean and desert is Namibia's only seaside resort, Swakopmund, where a number of optional activities such as quad-biking, sand boarding, scenic flights are available.
DAYS 6 - 11, Fish River Canyon, Cape Town
We continue south to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the world's oldest desert. At dawn climb to the top of a giant sand dune for a dramatic sunrise over the vast sand sea and walk to the shimmering saltpans and enjoy a guided walk amidst the dunes. Further south we visit another natural wonder of Africa - Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world.
Continuing to the Gariep (Orange) River we camp on its banks and enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Crossing into South Africa, we pass through Namaqualand's barren landscape and stop overnight in the Citrus area of the Western Cape. After a cultural visit to one of Cape Towns townships for an insight into how some of the poorest people in Africa live, our tour ends.
