Venture into the heart of Ladakh, a remote region ringed by the Himalaya and home to Tantric Buddhists, medieval traditions and tiny oasis towns. Trek through snow-strewn landscapes, explore monasteries and forts and get an insight into local life on a village homestay. Challenging and charming Ladakh is sure to impress.
Days 1-2 Leh
Take in Leh at a sedate pace - the altitude is quite extreme and with such a relaxed vibe, there is no need to rush. Set against the Himalaya and overlooking the crumbling Old Town is Leh Palace. Take a guided walking tour of the town to visit the palace, the old quarter and Victory Peak.
Day 3 Likir
Gaze at the newly restored bodhisattvas and celestial beings at Basgo Palace en route to Likir. Walk to the 11th century Klu-kkhyil Gompa to see prayer rooms full of statues and a museum containing religious objects made from human bones.
Days 4-6 Himalaya Village Trek
Trek through tiny villages and over high passes with magical views of the surrounding Himalayan valleys. Spend the night in a local friend's house, discover traditional Ladakhi meals and visit a crumbling ruined fort.
Day 7 Lamayuru
Drive to Lamayuru and discover the ancient legends among its bizarre moonscape of wind-ravaged towers and ravines. Visit the 10th century Lamayuru Gompa, the oldest in Ladakh, rising out of the high cliffs as though born of them.
Days 8-10 Leh
Spend a full day of sightseeing at Shey Palace, Thiksey, Hemis Monastery and Stok Palace Museum, stopping for lunch along the way. Back in Leh, seek out a rooftop cafe to relax, enjoy the deep blue of the sky and celebrate an incredible journey.
